Dr. Depcik What were your responsibilities while working at KU School of Engineering? Worked on a project for the EXPO and helped the mentors with their research. How many hours a week did you work on your project? 2-3 What hours did you work? M-F 1-3pm Do you feel your experience has been helpful in your decision to become or not become an engineer? Yes, it showed more of what i would be studying in college and helped me narrow down what i want to major in. How has this experience influenced your decision, either positively or negatively, in what you plan to study in college? In college I have decided to pursue Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, mostly because of Research and Design. What is your opinion of Research and Design? Research and Design is a great program for students looking to further their education in engineering after high school. The program offers an amazing opportunity for students to learn at the college level and share those findings with other students. The experience i gained while at KU helped me decide exactly what i want to study throughout college next year, and it gave me a year early headstart.

Dr. Sorem What were your responsibilities while working at KU School of Engineering? Designed modifications for nost one mount. Talked with team to get input on ideas, and kept the work journal for the team captain. How many hours a week did you work on your project? 7-8 What hours did you work? M-F 1:15-3:00 Do you feel your experience has been helpful in your decision to become or not become an engineer? Yes, very much so. How has this experience influenced your decision, either positively or negatively, in what you plan to study in college? It basically gave me an ideal picture of what the working field is going to be like, such as computer design, tema work, and hands-on abilities. What is your opinion of Research and Design? Minus the college preperation for the future, Research and Design gives kids a chance to really shape their future. It gives high school students an advantage to decide their future.
	Matt Germain: What department(s) at KU did you work in while enrolled in Research and Design at Lawrence High School? Civil Engineering List Professor(s) you worked under. Dr. Bai, Dr. Huang What were your responsibilities while working at KU School of Engineering? Studied and designed a paddle, worked with hand tools, etc. How many hours a week did you work on your project? 2-3 What hours did you work? Varied Do you feel your experience has been helpful in your decision to become or not become an engineer? Yes, got a better idea of what I do and don't want to study. How has this experience influenced your decision, either positively or negatively, in what you plan to study in college? Throughout the process I learned that I no longer want to study civil engineering, or at least the construction aspect, but I discovered I enjoy Industrial Design much more. What is your opinion of Research and Design? Working with Dr. Huang was awesome, it made me look forward to going into industrial design, and I would recomment this program, I had a lot of fun.

Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering List Professor(s) you worked under. Dr. Gehrke, Dr. Berkland What were your responsibilities while working at KU School of Engineering? Under Dr. Gehrke I had to make gels to see how well they absorbed proteins and then released them in water, I then had to record my data and present it. Under Dr. Berkland we studied how to release more medicine into asthma patients from albuterol inhalers. How many hours a week did you work on your project? 8-10 What hours did you work? M-F 1-3 Do you feel your experience has been helpful in your decision to become or not become an engineer? This experience was beyond helpful. How has this experience influenced your decision, either positively or negatively, in what you plan to study in college? Talking with the mentors about the differences between engineering and pharmacy or chemistry degrees helped me to decide that chemistry was the main component in me wanting to do chemical engineering, but while working I also realized I'd like to work more with people and i wanted to go into medicine as well as chemistry, and pharmacy met both of those wants. What is your opinion of Research and Design? Research and Design helped me to recognize the differences between chemical engineering and pharmacy. It proved my love for chemistry but also my desire for less math. Being given this opportunity to explore college majors has helped me to make major life decisions and I recomment this course to anyone considering to go into engineering or science majors.

Dr. Williams What were your responsibilities while working at KU School of Engineering? Helped mix biodiesels, and converted an RC car to a biodiesel powered car. How many hours a week did you work on your project? 8-10 What hours did you work? M-F 1-3 Do you feel your experience has been helpful in your decision to become or not become an engineer? Yes How has this experience influenced your decision, either positively or negatively, in what you plan to study in college? The majority of my work was done on my own, I had freedom to do things my own way, and I enjoyed who I worked with. What is your opinion of Research and Design? Throughout my entire high school career Research and Design was definitely the most unique and fun class I took. Instead of just another boring class, I was able to actually get out and do some "real world" work. Dr. Berkland did everything possible to make sure I had the best possible experience. I would recommend Reasearch and Design to anyone looking for something other than just another class to fill their schedule.

Constructing and programming LED cube How many hours a week did you work on your project? 8 hours What hours did you work? 3pm to 5pm Do you feel your experience has been helpful in your decision to become or not become an engineer? Yes How has this experience influenced your decision, either positively or negatively, in what you plan to study in college? Broadened my scope on engineering possibilites. What is your opinion of Research and Design? It is a good chance to expose unsure students to solidfy and experience new/interesting possibilities.

Chemical Engineering (Biofuels) during the 1st semester and Mechanical Engineering (Eco-Hawks) List Professor(s) you worked under. Dr. Williams, Dr. Depcik, Dr. Berkland What were your responsibilities while working at KU School of Engineering? 1st semester - help with grad projects such as developoing a non toxic and/or combustable catylist for biodiesel production. Worked on developing a more efficient and cost effective dye-sensitized photocentric cell. How many hours a week did you work on your project? Usually between 5-8 hrs. What hours did you work? M-F 1-3 Do you feel your experience has been helpful in your decision to become or not become an engineer? Defiantly. I was fairly strong in my resolve, but this has solidified any and all interests and aspirations I had. How has this experience influenced your decision, either positively or negatively, in what you plan to study in college? If anything, this project has introduced me to the field of chemical engineering. This is my 1st choice for a college major. What is your opinion of Research and Design? It is an incredible and I hope it continues to grow in the next few years. I strongly encourage anyone with engineering interest or curiosity to participate.
