The Program
If you will be 17 before September 1st, would like to participate in the Education through Outreach program and study engineering, we invite you to join us!
We are now in year two of Eto. Students currently working in labs at KU are experiencing nanotechnologies, environmental issues in architectureal engineering, chemical engineering and students and faculty members are learning that this program really works for high school students who are trying to find out if engineering is the field of study for them.
2010 was the inaugural year for the Education through Outreach program. The students who participated in the program rate it as very successful in preparing them for their college experience. We anticipate year 2 to be even better.
The EtO program has developed from the PI’s service on the Lawrence High School (LHS), Technology Department Advisory Committee. Ms. Charlie Lauts, the Chair of the Technology Department and project consultant, currently instructs four courses, College Prep Engineering, Architecture Drawing, AutoCAD and Technical Graphics. The EtO program will be developed through her College Prep Engineering course. The EtO program has the following specific objectives; 1) provide a working knowledge of engineering disciplines to participating junior high and high school students, 2) improve personal skills such as leadership, communication, and cooperation in participating high school students, 3) increase awareness of engineering and pertinent high school courses to incoming students, especially female and minority, as a pathway to a STEM career, and 4) disseminate program resources online to secondary school educators.
